COUNSELING SPECIALTIES:

EMDR THERAPY

EMDR therapy is an evidence-based therapy that helps to process trauma in a new, less distressing way. EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing, is an innovative, research-supported approach to psychotherapy for resolving disturbing and traumatic experiences, whether they occurred recently or decades ago. Survivors of natural disaster, combat, abuse, assault, accidents, chronic illness and other incidents of traumatic stress have all benefited from the skillful use of EMDR.

Many people have also found EMDR effective as a mind/body approach to treat a broad range of other emotional and physical conditions such as depression, anxiety, phobias and addiction. Others have used EMDR to enhance internal resources like self-confidence and determination, or to achieve peak performance in their professional or athletic endeavors.

PLAY THERAPY

Play therapy differs from regular play in that the therapist helps children to address and resolve their own problems. Play is a childs natural language. Play therapy builds on this and the natural way that children learn and relate about themselves, their relationships, and the world around them. Through play therapy, children learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behavior, develop problem-solving skills, and learn a variety of ways of relating to others. Play provides a safe psychological distance from their problems and allows expression of thoughts and feelings appropriate to their development.

When faced with stress we either become hyper-aroused or hypo-aroused. During this state of stress, called dysregulation, our thinking processes become confused and distorted, and our short-term memory is suppressed. Our behavior, when dysregulated, is an attempt to bring ourselves back to a state of regulation, which is a calmer state, no longer in stress overload. That’s why calming the stress diminishes the behavior.

Regulation is the state of stress within your window of tolerance. We all have our own window of tolerance. If the stress you experience is within your tolerance level, you can maintain regulation. Dysregulation occurs when you experience stress that is outside

of or greater than your window of tolerance. For some children the window of tolerance is very small and too much stress will leave the child trapped in a state of fear resulting in problem behaviors. In therapy, I help children and teens express, process, and understand the Fear that is throwing them outside of their window of tolerance-ultimately calming the stress and diminishing the behavior.

Self Regulation

ADOPTION, ATTACHMENT, TRAUMA

Adoption is a process that can impact every stage of the life cycle. While adoption may have been a joyful event in your life, it is important to recognize that there is no adoption without loss. Although adoptive parents undergo countless hours of training prior to placement, parenting often presents unique and unexpected challenges that may require clinical assistance  and coaching.  Child, teen, and adulut adoptees may struggle with identity, difficulty trusting others, reciprocity in relationship, shame, negative core beliefs, immobilizing fear, lack of empathy, difficulty repairing relational breaks, sensory processing issues, inablility to regulate emotions, lying, and manipulation.

I am skilled and specially trained in working with clients who have experienced relationship-based trauma, such as abuse, neglect, abandonment, adoption, orphanage care, or disruptions in caregivers.  In therapy, I utliize education and training in Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP), Theraplay, Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI), The Post Institute model for behavioral challenges, Attachment Focused Family Therapy, and Filial Therapy. Additionally, I draw heavily from my expeirence and tenure as the Adolescent and Family Therapist at Change Academy Lake of the Ozark (CALO), the premeire RTC specialzing in the treatment of Reactive Attachment Disorder.

TEENS

Adolescence is a time of amazing discovery, growth, and change. Yet the teenage years can be challenging for everyone involved, and no wonder: teens are figuring out who they are, who they want to be, what they believe, their place in this world, and where to go with their lives. Not children, but not quite an adult, today's adolescents are expected to manage increasingly complex and challenging life choices. It’s critical for parents and teenagers to build and maintain a deep, meaningful connection, because one thing is certain about dealing with teenagers – it’s all about the relationship, more than any other age group. This can, however, become challenging as any parent or teenager knows. If your adolescent is struggling and needs help,  please call to set up an appointment.

CASH, CHECK, DEBIT CARDS, CREDIT CARDS, HSA's ARE ACCEPTED. PAYMENT IS DUE AT THE BEGINING OF THE SESSION.

Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI)

TBRI® is an attachment-based, trauma-informed intervention that is designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. TBRI® uses Empowering Principles to address physical needs, Connecting Principles for attachment needs, and Correcting Principles to disarm fear-based behaviors. While the interventions are based on years of attachment, sensory processing, and neuroscience research, the heartbeat of TBRI® is connection. TBRI® is designed for children from “hard places” such as abuse, neglect, and/or trauma. Because of their histories, it is often difficult for these children to trust the loving adults in their lives, which often results in perplexing behaviors. TBRI® offers practical tools for parents, caregivers, teachers, or anyone who works with children, to see the “whole child” in their care and help that child reach his highest potential.

Family Based Play Therapy

Family based play therapy, such as Filial Therapy, Child Parent Relationship Therapy, and Theraplay utilizes the parent child relationship to facilitate connection, joy, and healing as well as help the parent (not the therapist) to become the change agent in the child's life.

Expressive/Experiential Therapy:

Expressive therapy, also called experiential therapy, helps a person express a feeling or pattern. This is done through the use of art (drawing, painting or collages), music, and sandtray. In expressive therapy we work with the experience of how something feels. This work is also about the process of creating something that goes beyond the words used in traditional talk therapy. It is about the process, not about the finished product. Expressive therapy increases a person’s understanding of themselves and provides a way to cope with difficult emotions.

Parent Coaching and Support

Parenting is the hardest job on earth. Every parent gets to the point where they want to ripe their own hair out! Sometimes you just need a little support and guidance free of judgement.  With 3 kids of my own, I know, I have been there. In parent coaching, I provide non-judgemental acceptance and empathy coupled with effective techniques to help parents learn new skills and build a better relationship with their child.
